A Printer’s Film Service Saves Images For National Geographic Explorer Team

Summerfield, NC -The call came into A Printer’s Film Service from Eaton Creative, Inc of New Windsor, Maryland on July 8, 2002.  While on assignment for National Geographic Explorer a disaster happened.  Valuable exposed film fell into the sea off of the coast of Alaska.  Wendy Wolf, production assistant was called from the remote location and told to find a company that could handle salvaging damaged film.  After looking at suppliers in Washington, DC and NYC, Wendy was directed to the APFS website by a National Geographic photographer who had used the Summerfield company to process film taken in Kentucky at coal mines. One of his rolls had gotten wet also.  With careful handling APFS was able to reproduce images for him.

Wolf called APFS owner Gary Houston, told him of the referral, informing him of the critical National Geographic footage.  “Please make us look good. We called lots of photo labs. You are the only company to understand our need for specific, expedited handling. No one else seems to have any experience in salvage and restoration.”

Shipped from Alaska the wet film arrived in Summerfield on July 10, 2002. Houston hand dried the film in total darkness then processed, evaluated, and printed them into enlargements.  He shipped the printed rolls late that evening from Piedmont International Airport in order to make the clients deadline with National Geographic deadline early the next day.

A specialist in photo recovery and illustrations the company has been in operation since 1978.  APFS worked for Major League Soccer in 2001, salvages photos for Disaster One, and is the developer of summerfield-nc.com for the Town of Summerfield. In June APFS produced a CD for the Office of Public Information, Baha’i and the World Council of Religions on an international project to promote tolerance and unity in diversity.

“When the phone rings we never know who will be on the other end of the line or what service they will need,” states owner Gary Houston.  “We really push to make our client’s deadlines. With over 35 services and 24 years of production experience we are called on to handle many critical projects. Clients can come from anywhere.  The company gets most of our work from referrals and our website.
